On the 11th of August, the WA chapter of the Air Conditioning & Mechanical Contractors Association of Australia held their annual Industry Excellence Awards, which celebrates the outstanding achievements of emerging leaders within the HVAC industry.
We are proud to share six of our talented employees were Finalists for their respective awards, with four going on to win in their categories.
Cale Symons, Project Manager – Winner Project Management and Support Award
Cale has built an extensive career in the Mechanical industry, progressing to his current position as a Project Manager at Fredon. His previous roles as a duct installer, site supervisor, project engineer, and facilities manager have provided him with a comprehensive understanding of the field, equipping him with the necessary knowledge to excel in his current role.
Cale is a highly valued member of our team, known for his exceptional leadership qualities and for cultivating an environment focused on finding solutions. Whenever a challenge arises, he collaborates closely with the team to swiftly address and resolve the issue.
Beyond his daily duties, Cale proactively provides training, mentoring and constructive feedback to junior site team members and non-site-based staff, such as engineers, draftsperson, estimators and contract administrators, uplifting their construction, contractual and site knowledge.
Sam Wong, Estimating Manager – Winner Future Leader Award
Sam embarked on his professional journey as a Graduate Sales Engineer, gradually ascending through various roles such as Consulting Sales Manager and Commercial Account Manager. His path ultimately led him to Fredon, where he assumed the position of Mechanical Estimator and swiftly advanced to the role of Estimating Manager, demonstrating remarkable achievements in the past two years by consistently driving growth of over 10% in both major construction and CSG divisions.
Sam embodies the qualities of a leader. Not only does he excel individually, but he also fosters a collaborative environment by readily assisting colleagues from diverse departments. His passion for the industry is evident, as he actively invests time in training and mentoring the junior members of our team, nurturing their professional growth.
Christopher Kuek, Technician – Winner Trade and Technician of the Year Award
After winning the Trade and Technician of the Year Award, Christopher Kuek acknowledged the profound significance of this honour.
“Winning this award means that my efforts and hard work have been recognised. It will spur me on to strive to achieve greater things for my company, my colleagues, and our customers. Receiving this award not only validates my commitment to excellence but also motivates me to continue pushing the boundaries of innovation in the field. It serves as a reminder that the HVACR industry plays a critical role in maintaining the quality of life we enjoy today. I am immensely grateful to my mentors, colleagues, and supporters who have contributed to my growth and success.”
Patrick Pumfrey, Apprentice – Winner Trainee/ Apprentice of the Year Award
As the winner of the Trainee/Apprentice of the Year Award, Patrick Pumfey spoke about the collective spirit behind the accolade:
“Being a Winner makes me very proud of myself and I am very humble to even be nominated. I am grateful for the guidance and support of my mentors, teachers, and fellow apprentices who have played an integral role in my development. This achievement is not just a personal accomplishment; it reflects the collective effort of those who have believed in my potential and provided opportunities for growth.”
Josh Reed, Project Manager – Finalist Project Management and Support Award
Josh began his career as a Mechanical Plumber Apprentice before advancing to Leading Hand and then Project Manager, overseeing major projects in mechanical plumbing. In 2021, he joined Fredon as a Project Manager, leading his first two building services projects: Murdoch University’s New Academic Building and the Central Chiller Plant.
Although his prior experience as a project manager for a mechanical plumbing contractor equipped him well, delivering a comprehensive mechanical system posed fresh challenges. Josh showcased remarkable abilities by consistently meeting tight deadlines, surpassing client expectations, and conquering unexpected obstacles. He approached challenges with poise and determination, skilfully resolving issues and engaging all stakeholders.
Josh possesses qualities that instil confidence in others and inspire his team. With his leadership, his team perseveres through difficulties and experiences the gratification of making significant contributions to the completion of each project.
Declan Williams, Engineering Manager– Finalist Engineering and Technical Award
Declan started as a Design Engineer at Fredon Air NSW, handling projects from concept to commissioning. He later relocated to Perth, taking on the role of Engineering Manager at Fredon Air WA.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, his technical skills were evident as he completed two hospital projects in NSW. Despite pandemic challenges, he adapted the mechanical systems to enhance infectious disease control. Joining the WA team, he oversaw the successful completion of Murdoch University’s New Academic Building and Central Chiller Plant, which had unique challenges. His innovative designs for prefabricated Chiller Plant have led to new avenues of opportunity for our team.
Driven by a profound interest in the field, Declan regularly advocates for developing the next generation of engineers. He encourages holistic problem-solving, where engineering addresses societal challenges and fosters an environment of innovative thinking.
