The new Sydney Metro platforms are currently being delivered under Central Station as well as the landmark Central Walk – a new underground pedestrian concourse to help customers get around Sydney’s busiest railway station was completed.

Sydney Metro City & Southwest is a 30-kilometre extension of metro rail from the end of Sydney Metro North West at Chatswood under Sydney Harbour, through new CBD stations and south west to Bankstown. It is due to open in 2024 with seven new metro stations and 11 upgraded stations.

Central Station Metro works formed part of Sydney Metro City & Southwest.

The refurbishments of Central Station also included infrastructure upgrades in and around the precinct that were necessary for the new operations of the metro station.

Fredon were engaged to provide the Electrical, Communications and HVAC works for both the existing areas of the station and the new metro station. These areas included public spaces such as the new Metro Box, Northern and Grand Concourses, Eastern Suburbs Railway Concourse, the new Central Walk pedestrian concourse, and critical back-of-house areas.

Fredons scope of works included:

  • Design, install and commission all electrical, CCTV, Public Address and Station Service interface, air conditioning and ventilation systems for the new Metro Box, Central Walk and Eastern Entrance areas.
  • Complete electrical, communication and security upgrades and new installations in the existing Sydney Trains areas of Central Station – Northern, Grand, Southern and ESR concourses, pedestrian and baggage tunnels, critical equipment rooms and back of house areas.
  • Upgrade and install new air conditioning and ventilation systems in the existing ESR concourse.
  • Supply ventilation and cooling to all public areas, including the new underground Metro Box platform & critical back of house rooms that contain equipment that are essential for the ongoing.

The team won the Major Projects Award at Fredon’s annual Online Conference.

Central Walk underground concourse was opened to the public in April 2023.
