Pipe & Tube Mill

Services: Design, Install

Client: BlueScope

Location: Unanderra, NSW

BlueScope as part of an initiative to create a state-of-the-art Pipe and Tube Mill, the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere, within the existing warehouses at the former Stainless Site in Unanderra, developed the implementation of a new electrical distribution system, upgrading the existing S1 Outdoor switchyard, and a new switch room.

BlueScope engaged Fredon for the design verification, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of this project’s electrical scope of works.

Fredon’s scope encompassed constructing process control equipment and meticulously installing, testing, and commissioning cabling that connects new and existing switch-rooms, switchyards, Process Control Centres, and Protection Room. Implementing a new 33/11kV power supply system required modifications to civil foundations and high-voltage equipment, with a dedicated protection room safeguarding critical components.

Integral to the project was the integration of an 11kV switchboard in Switch-Room 2 and preparing Switch-Room S11 for 415V operations. The intricate cabling networks interconnect various components, spanning for the S1 switchyard to the 11kV switchboard in Switch-Room 2, and link the new Protection Room with Switchyard S1 and Switch-Room S11.

This comprehensive cabling architecture ensures efficient power distribution, highlighting seamless integration of engineering expertise and innovative infrastructure. The project’s dedication to advancing technological capabilities is poised to set new industry standards, contributing significantly to the overall success of the P&T Mill initiative at the site.

The team successfully completed the project in April 2024.

The Pipe & Tube Mill team won the Industrial Small Projects Award at the 2024 NECA NSW Awards.
