Fredon was engaged to upgrade the welding line at the Alstom Train & Tram Manufacturing Facility at Dandenong Victoria. Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has signed a framework contract to supply 100 Flexity low-floor Next Generation Trams for the Victorian government’s $986 million X’Trapolis 2.0 train project. This agreement is with the Department of Transport and Planning and involves the largest urban tram network in the world.

Fredon installed 31 new complex welders enabling Alstom to build a new train every 4 days, an Australian first welding system.

The team created a virtual model and constructed the entire project from the ground up, allowing the client to visualise the design concept and make informed decisions. They also had to work around a live train facility, which posed challenges, however close coordination with the Alstom team was key to overcoming these challenges and achieving project delivery and target dates.

The project was successfully completed in March 2023 and has since been recognised internally, receiving Fredon’s Minor Project Award for 2023 at our annual Conference.

Throughout this project, custom training programs were implemented to meet the specific demands of the project and address the unique needs of each individual. We take pride in empowering our team with new skills through on-the-job learning, thereby enhancing the value we deliver to our clients even further.

Fredon’s work on this project was also Highly Commended at the NECA VIC State Excellence Awards in the Industrial Small category.
